The Llanwrtyd History Resource
Group and pupils of Ysgol Dôlafon have recently worked in conjunction to
produce the book “Memories of Childhood”, which was launched at the Victoria
Hall on 18th October 2013. One group of pupils interviewed a small group
of older residents of Llanwrtyd and another group listened to the interviews
and wrote about them.
This successful and well-attended event saw Tony Thorpe, Trustee and Project Manager, welcome around 70 children and adults to the presentation. He explained that when the History Resource Group was first discussed, it was hoped that there would be a close association with the school.
Kath McCann, Volunteer Team Leader for Oral History continued the story by explaining how the children had determined the questions which included school days, Christmas and birthdays, religious worship, Ffair Bont, Eisteddfodau, play time and outings. The children who had written the reports had chosen their own fonts, drawn illustrations and used clip art.
Part of the History Resource’s memorabilia collection includes some visitors’ books from Myrtle House B&B & Café. These were kindly loaned by Elizabeth Ann Davies, and a CD, ‘Memories of Pony Trekking’, had been produced with some of the pupils reading extracts from the books which had been left during the heyday of trekking in Llanwrtyd.
The pupils were then asked to say what they had learned from the exercise and their comments demonstrated the vast difference in life in the 30s and 40s to what it is today. The children were each presented with a book by June Newman, a Trustee for the project. The interviewees were then presented with a book by the pupil who had done the interview. The presentation of a book and a CD was also made to Mrs Davies in appreciation of her support.
John Rowlands, Chairman of the Trustees, thanked everyone for attending, all the pupils involved, staff of Ysgol Dôlafon, Gwyneth Rowlands who had translated the book into Welsh, and Pat Dryden, Admin Officer, for putting the whole thing together.
Gill Lloyd, Head Teacher at the school thanked the group for working so closely with the children, and Mrs McCann for all the work she had put into the project. The books and CDs were (and still are) available by donation and refreshments were offered to all attending.
